SSIS Introduces Flipped Classroom Approach

As technology becomes more accessible to teachers and learners, technology becomes an important tool in enriching and enhancing the learning experiences of the students inside and outside the classroom.  To maximize the use of technology, SSIS introduces the Flipped Classroom approach for core subjects English, Math, and Science from the 5th to 11th Grade classes for the AY 2016-2017.

 The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed.  Showed video lectures are viewed by the students before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions (

            In a traditional classroom, lessons are usually delivered by the teacher who becomes the disseminator of information.  The discussion is centered on the teacher who controls the flow of conversation.  Interactions therefore become limited to small group tasks or activities designed by the teacher and the children are also given reading assignments and exercises to work on at home.

            The flipped classroom reverses the approach of the traditional classroom.  The lessons or lectures are viewed by the students at home, either online or as files saved in their tablets/computers.  There will also be questions to test their understanding of the contents viewed.  When they come to class, the students already have a background on the topic that they will discuss among their peers, with the teacher acting only as facilitators of the group discussion.  More time is allocated to exploring related exercises and giving of immediate feedback.   In this set-up, teachers also take on the role of coaches who guide students individually.

            In the flipped classroom, a student works at his own pace.  Unlike in teacher-delivered lecture where the student has to be fully engaged to decode what is being said and catch up with the fast learners, viewing a lecture/video individually will allow the student to pause, reflect, or review the material.  The student can also do some further reading on related materials to enhance his/her knowledge.

            The school therefore, encourages the parents to provide adequate facilities such as computer and internet connection that will enable the children to view the lectures/videos.  Adequate supervision is also required for young learners when viewing the contents of the media.
